MFNW live: Ninjas, Portugal, The Man.

Who were those masked men?
One of the secondary pleasures of these
long festival weekends are the peripheral activities that occur on the
street outside of the official show schedules.
The sidewalk outside of Berbati’s Pan
at S.W. second and Ankeny was the scene of one such spectacle Saturday
night around 9 P.M. when a group of ninjas suddenly materialized from
nowhere (you know, all super-stealthy and ninja-like) and played a
two-song set of thrash metal performed with battery-operated amplifiers
and what appeared to be a kid-sized drum set. Yes, ninjas in full ninja
drag, playing metal. I am not making this up.
After frightening passers-by with their
five minute hit and run musical attack, the ninja band threw all their
gear into a van and immediately tore off into the night, leaving little
more evidence of their rock-raid than still-reverberating eardrums and a
slight smell of incense in the air. They may or may not be members of a
local metal band named, no kidding, Ninja, but one thing’s for certain:
their Kung Fu was very strong.
